Why Use AI?

Artificial intelligence is becoming a powerful tool in the job search process, helping to explore careers, refine application materials, and prepare for interviews more efficiently. It can help you to better understand job descriptions, identify relevant skills, generate tailored resumes and cover letters, and practice interview responses. It can also support networking efforts by helping draft outreach messages and clarify personal branding. When used thoughtfully, AI can reduce uncertainty and provide greater confidence as you navigate the transition from college to career.

However, it’s important to use AI responsibly and authentically. AI should enhance—not replace—your own thinking, voice, and experiences. Submitting unedited or misleading AI-generated content can harm credibility with employers, who ultimately value critical thinking, communication skills, and genuine self-awareness. The most successful job searchers will be those who learn to use AI as a partner—leveraging it to work smarter while still demonstrating the unique qualities and insights that set them apart. AI is a powerful assistant, not a replacement for your judgement, effort, or authenticity.

Note: The Center for Career and Calling views generative AI, such as ChatGPT and Copilot, as supplementary tools for students’ career development and encourages students to evaluate ways it may be helpful. But while generative AI has potential, it cannot replace personalized guidance, real-world insights, and holistic career planning, making career center engagement critical for complete and tailored career development.

How to Use AI Effectively

Start with a strong prompt. Define your ask, the audience, tone, and the outcome you need. Provide the job description.

Use it as an assistant not an author. Ask for multiple versions, then refine with additional prompts and ensure the final product still sounds like you and matches your level of expertise.

Choose the right tool. Use the one that best matches the task – drafting, formatting, designing, analyzing.

Be truthful. Al hallucinates and fabricates information. Carefully inspect the results to ensure the content you use is accurate and authentic. Follow the employer instructions for using AI in the application, and protect your personal information.

Prompt Library

The prompt library provides prompts that mirror the BJU Career Development Model, organized to support each stage of the model: Discover, Explore, Experience, Connect, and Launch.

The prompts are meant to complement, not replace, career coaching and the help that personal advising can provide. They are meant to be starting points and are not exhaustive.
